Hyphened-Nation a été inspiré par les voyages des auteurs à l’étranger et le temps passé au Royaume-Uni. Vivre à l’étranger a été une expérience révélatrice, elle a appris à mieux comprendre certains aspects de la culture américaine au fur et à mesure qu’elle vivait à l’étranger. Ce livre raconte ses réflexions et son expérience d’être traitée comme une Américaine, plutôt que comme une personne à trait d’union.
La différence était frappante et l’a amenée à comprendre pourquoi les États-Unis sont l’un des seuls, si ce n’est le seul pays, à distinguer ses citoyens selon leur origine ethnique avant leur nationalité.
C’est un voyage de découverte pour comprendre que ces mêmes boîtes dans lesquelles nous nous laissons enfermer comme américains à trait d’union, limitent la croissance économique, éducative, sociétale et culturelle. Son histoire se concentre sur les différences culturelles entre les États-Unis et la communauté mondiale, et sur les mesures que les citoyens peuvent prendre pour créer une nation de coalition sans trait d’union.

Nicole Draffen
“As a a builder, a fixer, and a challenger; I love tearing things apart to understand them, and then try to prove or disprove their merit. This allows me to move through life with an air of certainty about what I know, and also what I don’t know. So naturally when I lived abroad, the social and cultural consciousness of the people I met, and the things I observed inspired my natural inclination to understand and study the value of cultural norms. The more I traveled overseas, the more I grew to understand certain aspects of the American perception of culture. My journeys inspired me to write a book.
However, when I’m not making plans on how to change the world, you can find me in my garden tending to a vast variety of plants, Feng Shui-ing everything in sight, pursuing my passion of collecting old paintings, attending jazz festivals, antiquing and running. I truly believe each of us can achieve whatever we set out to do, if we are determined, and remain positive.”
